This is a list of 31 of the best philosophical quotes from some of the greatest minds throughout history.  While it is one thing to find entertainment and inspiration in quotes, philosophical quotes take things to another level by making you think.  I challenge you to take a moment and think about each of these philosophical quotes, especially the ones that stick out to you, and attempt to apply them to your current situation and your life.

Overpower to Overcome: What is Power?

Flickr Photo by kelsey_lovefusionphoto

Power is one of the greatest forces in life.  Everyone wants power.  Even the most selfless people in the world desire power in some sense.  Power is life and life is power.  Without power there is no life and without life there is no power.

There are a lot of things that make up power.  Control, respect, might, mastery, strength, and force all are a part of power.  Oddly enough power is also a part of all of these things.

The concept of power is difficult for us humans to get a real comprehension of.  It encompasses a lot of aspects of life and is encompassed by a number of the same aspects.  For this reason power is very real and surreal at the same time.

Wow.  What a concept!

Don’t worry if you get lost when you read this.  You are not alone.  When I first started thinking about the concept of power, I often lost myself.  But it got me thinking.  And that’s what I want you to do.

Start thinking.

Think about the power you have and the power you desire.  Think of how power, and the desire for power, effects your life and how the things you do effect your power.

Inside power there is a will that is unlike anything in human nature.  There is also a great desire, determination, courage, passion, and strength.

But that “will” is what makes power what it is.  And power makes the will possible.

I got the idea of this concept by reading a little bit from Friedrich Nietzche, the 19th Century German philosopher.  Nietzche came up with the concept of “will to power”.

I have to be honest and admit that a lot of Nietzche’s philosophies are a bit over my head, but what I read got me thinking.  And that’s what philosophy is all about.  It’s about learning to think for yourself on a deeper level and come up with your own philosophies.

The concept of “will” signifies extreme want, determined desire, and unending devotion.  We desire power and so power fulfills our desires.  Inherent in our desires is a sense of power.  There is a strong unity between power and desire and it’s bond will never be broken.  Once a new level of power is achieved, more is desired.

That is human nature.

Desire for power is not the same as greed.  This desire can actually be quite selfless.  In fact, selflessness in itself has a certain level of power for people who desire it.

I want you to think today of what you truly desire.  Do not be ashamed of anything you want.  Do not stifle your desires or your power.  Stifling causes frustration and stress.

Free your mind to desire whatever power it wills.  Remember, a true power must have desire attached to it.  Any power that we acquire that we don’t want is not a true power.

So think of everything you desire.  What are your goals?  What are your plans for the future?  What do you want most in life?

These things are what will give you power.  As you move along a journey toward these things, you will gain power.  This power will give you strength.  This strength will add to your life and you will build more power.

Power is life and life is power.

There’s more to come on this subject in the near future.  Don’t overcomplicate things.  Just start thinking.
